The Elite Architecture of Zero-Cost Serverless Databases
Why paying for complex backend hosting is often an architectural failure, and how to harness Google Sheets and Apps Script for enterprise-grade routing.
There is an obsession in the development community with spinning up complex, paid database clusters for applications that simply do not need that level of infrastructure overhead.
For many of my internal tools and personal lifelines, I utilise a completely serverless, zero-cost architecture using Google Apps Script and Google Sheets. Sheets is not just a spreadsheet; it is an immensely powerful, visually accessible JSON database if queried correctly.
When dealing with medical tracking for teenagers, it allows for 'Silent Syncing.' The teenager interacts with a slick React frontend, while the data pipes directly into a private Google Sheet. The parent has full access to the medical logs without ever having to invade the teenager's digital privacy.
The best architecture is the one that costs nothing to maintain, scales silently, and empowers the end-user.
